As the road to the Triple Crown begins to rev up, you can’t help but to getting excited about the possibilities. That’s the great thing about horse racing. Zeroing in on the contenders and following their progress is a blast.

Thinking of those NY winter racing stars back in the days before the Breeders Cup. I remember being desperate to find horses to follow in those winter months. Horses like “Turn and Count” and “Patriots Dream” became stars during those periods.

My brother and I made our first trip to Kentucky to see the Derby in 1982. While riding around we saw a large horse and stopped to pet him. Next day we went to find John Ward’s farm to see Forego. We ended up at the exact same farm we had stopped at the day before. We had been petting Forego.

Two memorable moments… meeting Forego in 1984 and Secretariat in 1982. At 12 years old, Secretariat still looked like he could demolish any field.
