A Malian proverb holds that to quench tomorrow’s thirst, communities must construct wells today.

It is time for sub-Saharan Africa to build that resilient future.
January 30, 2026 at 5:35 PM
To realize these resilience capacities, the nations of sub-Saharan Africa must work to ensure sustainable infrastructure, adequate investment, actionable information, & effective institutions.

These are the essential, interdependent pillars of resilient water systems.

Fourth, the frequency of droughts has tripled, and flooding has surged more than tenfold in sub-Saharan Africa since the 1970s.
January 30, 2026 at 5:35 PM
Third, rainfall patterns are becoming increasingly irregular as global temperatures warm.

Projections suggest some areas may experience greater annual precipitation, but much of the region could see average yearly rainfall drop 10 to 20 percent in the coming decades.
January 30, 2026 at 5:35 PM
Second, water demands in sub-Saharan Africa are climbing more quickly than anywhere else on Earth.

Across the region, domestic water needs are anticipated to triple from 2010 to 2050.
January 30, 2026 at 5:35 PM
First, its population is projected to climb 79 percent by 2054, with a corresponding increase in the demand for water.
January 30, 2026 at 5:35 PM
5 key intersecting factors drive the mounting challenges to water security in sub-Saharan Africa:
