Part of the reason that we write books about lone heroes is because the moral functioning of a society is DULL. It’s bureaucracy and logistics and sending out surveyors to make sure the wells get dug far enough from the cesspool. It does not lend itself well to a three-act-structure.

A few years ago, I went to visit my parents in Texas. They and their friends -- all retired boomers -- were deeply interested in the fate of the CTC. To them it was a great investment in the future, something that would help their children and grandchildren.
In the lead up to Election Day, presidential candidates had big ambitions for the future of the child tax credit, which is set to expire in 2025.
But there is unlikely to be a major expansion coming to 1 of the most popular policies for American families.
