If you like ceramics, be it throwing, firing or simply seeing within the mind of a maker, did you know that I wrote a book? It’s called ‘By My Hands’ and is available online or in most good bookshops. I also have a YouTube channel: m.youtube.com/@floriangadsby, where I post weekly about my practice.
The contents of this coming Monday’s kiln, soon to be reduction fired to cone ten. Lots of miniatures inside.

A few new glazes i’m thinking of using in the coming months, especially the one with a molten iron drop flowing down it. What do you think?

Are videos a thing here? In a way I’m favouring a text-based platform as a means of escape from the grind of the others. Either way, here’s the throwing of a simple stepped bowl.

A big hello to the many of you that have followed along here over the past few days. It’s lovely to see so many faces on @bsky.app — here’s a silly portrait of Ciro and me sat in front of a kiln that’s wafting out warm air after being cracked up open after a reduction firing to cone ten, (1290°C).

Nine individual cups with stepped or angular shapes, made in batches of 30 with the simple idea that no two can be exactly alike. This makes for a welcome change from all the hours spent throwing the same forms repetitively.

A tall, stepped bowl, made with a high-iron stoneware and reduction fired in my gas kiln to cone ten, (1290°C). It wasn’t great initially, I glazed it poorly on the inside, so to remedy that I coated black iron oxide over the interior surface and fired it a second time.

Macro photographs of my glazes and the metal inclusions I often wedge into my clay. There’s a whole world within the surfaces of these reduction fired pots.

My winter restock will go live on my website this coming Sunday, 24 November at 7:00 GMT. There’s some 350 pieces included, shipping is international and I’m already knee deep in packaging chips and cardboard, preparing for when the clock ticks over. See you then!

A jar specked with a flash caused by copper, from bronze that was wedged sparingly into clay six months ago… it’s still finding its way into my reclaim and into new pots, but I don’t mind.

Thoughts on paper — new pots to make.

Happy to be here — thanks @nigelslater.bsky.social for the invite, here's a precarious totem of pots to start things off. Promise not to jump around it too much when it's exhibited this coming November at YSP...
