Early spring flora at the mouth of the Mohawk River as the downy shadbush (Amelanchier arborea) hangs on the cliffside under the catkins of a hop hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). Peebles Island, Saratoga County.

The spore leaves of sensitive fern are visible all year and of different ages. This is one from last year still with spores.

Skunk cabbage, our earliest (and little noticed) wildflower of the year is starting to flower in most of its range in NY. It can melt the ice and snow around it since it generates its own heat. The yellow flower structure inside is producing pollen now and feeding the early insects.

At the Hudson River ice meadows the ice can strip the bark away from trees along the shore. This one happened years ago but the result is beautiful.

Two unrelated spiky fruits in the winter. Wild cucumber, a native vine (Echinocystis lobata) and cut-leaf teasel, a nonnative tall herb (Dipsacus laciniatus). Fox Preserve, Albany County.

Looked for skunk cabbage winter bracts in the swamp at Woodlawn Preserve, Schenectady but only saw sensitive fern spore fronds.
