With 'Reading at Supper,' from 1957, we are reminded of the importance Joan Eardley put on finding what she called the story behind human subjects - for her, a truly successful painting had to go deeper than a mere visual record.

'Mary.' (c1920) Gertrude Fiske was an accomplished Impressionist painter who trained under Frank Benson. Perhaps not as well known as some of her contemporaries but considered to be at least the equal of Mary Cassatt. An essential figure in the history of women painters.

'Boy with Comic.' (c1953) Of all the children who sat for Joan Eardley, Andrew Sampson was her favourite - a boldly but sensitively painted work, a picture which has authority and presence; a proper portrait and not a caricature.
