The tanish color on this particular product is mostly one precipitation type (snow north of the brighter colors), while those brighter returns reflect mixed precipitation/rain taking over. #NJ#NJWX#WX#Weather

Most of New Jersey is seeing rain, steady and heavy at times, but Sussex, Passaic and northern portions of Morris and Warren are holding onto wintry mix/snow. #NJ#NJWX#WX#Weather

Also, just to be clear, south of I-78, 90 percent of this storm or more is expected to be plain rain, heavy at times in the afternoon, with around 1"-1.5" of rain south of I-195.

If the colder indications in observational trends hold up, and the system moves in before 9 a.m., then the higher end of the ranges will probably occur, as well as the icing concern area.

Overall, these observational trends have me holding with my previous map from yesterday. If the warmer guidance ends up being correct, than the low figures on the map will verify.

However, dew points are in the teens north, 20s south, and this would tend to suggest the column cooling at the start, and some sleet, if snowflake production ends. In fact, I am somewhat wary of the warmer solutions with dew points in the teens north less than/about 12 hours out.

A lot of the guidance today has trended toward less snow and sleet, except in the Northwest, and more rain, so that raises the prospect of freezing rain. Again, we are talking a brief window, but it only takes a trace to cause travel issues.

Once cloud cover begins to increase, I expect a gradual increase in temperatures, but remain concerned they will remain around or below freezing by 7 a.m.

Temperatures tonight have fallen into the mid and upper 20s in a good chunk of the state away from the urban centers thanks to mostly clear skies. These temperature drops are lower than modeled. #NJ#NJWX#WX#Weather

While the attention will be on the snow, it should also be noted and emphasized that while brief, lasting 1-3 hours around daybreak into the morning commute, an area of light icing is possible in the central and south that could make for far more hazardous travel.

This is our first call snow and ice map for Tuesday's storm. The highest uncertainty is in the blue, where there remains some chance of higher totals should there be a front-end thump to allow the column to cool some and result in snow lingering longer before a changeover. #NJ#NJWX#WX#Weather

Showers will be around on Sunday. Monday will be sunny most of the day. Then a storm system arrives for Tuesday with a wintry mix/snow for some, heavy rain for others. #NJ#NJWX#WX#Weather
