We started a podcast where we talk to companies that hire Rust engineers, and our first episode with Tom Praderio of Parallel (Rust + trains!) is out now! Check the link below.
Rust is a joy to work with!

Have you ever wondered why Rust even needs the unsafe keyword at all? Tom Praderio of Parallel gave a very practical explanation of why it’s essential for the embedded programming they do on their electric rail cars in our most recent interview. Link below!

"You're telling me that once I'm a systems engineer, I'll know when to allocate and free memory?"

"No, Neo. When you're a systems engineer, you won't have to."

Parallel is "A Full Rust Shop"!
November 11, 2025 at 10:49 PM
Parallel is the company you end up with when a bunch of former SpaceX Engineers turn their attention to railroading. We talked to their Director of Engineering all about it on the last episode of our podcast. Just one spoiler though… They love the Rust language! Link below 👇

“We are a full Rust shop. Our product software is all in Rust. From the firmware running on bare metal devices through the vehicle software running on our custom Linux distribution... all the way up to our web software stack running on cloud servers." - Tom Praderio of Parallel

"I always spring for… Rust passion on a resume. That goes right to the top of my stack... people who love Rust tend to be really good programmers..."

That's from Tom Praderio in our latest interview. (linked below) You would be surprised how often we hear this sentiment!

What programming language do you reach for when you’re building a fleet of self-propelled rail cars for moving freight? Well, it has to be reliable, safe… Ah, yes, you use Rust! That is exactly what Parallel is doing. Check out our interview linked below to learn more:

Sonair's ADAR is an ultrasonic sensor with 3D coverage & no moving parts—a critical advantage over 2D LiDAR.

Q: What's ADAR's MOST competitive advantage for Autonomous Mobile Robots?

A. True 3D (180x180) Safety Coverage
B. Fewer Moving Parts
C. Deterministic Algorithms
D. Lower Cost to Manufacture

The paradox of safety-critical software: We use languages like C/C++ because they're certified, even if they're memory-unsafe.

As Espen Albrektsen said, "It's counterintuitive but that’s the way it is." He sees a future where certified Rust lowers the barrier for safer systems.

We just posted a new interview with Espen Albrektsen of Sonair. They are doing some very important work around safety-certified Rust. I think it's going to have a huge impact on the Rust community! Check it out with the link below:

Hey everyone, our next interview will be us (Drew & Grant), sharing the story of filtra.io — how we started, how we got here, and where we’re going.

What questions do you want us to answer? btw, going forward, some of our interviews will also be available on video :)

Hot take from our latest report: While Rust is king of performance, we predict decreasing enthusiasm for it in web dev where its steep learning curve can outweigh the benefits.

Do you agree or disagree?
