You can read more at CornellLab's AllAboutBirds, including this startling fact:
"A hungry loon family can put away a lot of fish. Biologists estimate that loon parents and their 2 chicks can eat about a half-ton of fish over a 15-week period."😮
Common Loon Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
The eerie calls of Common Loons echo across clear lakes of the northern wilderness. Summer adults are regally patterned in black and white. In winter, they are plain gray above and white below, and yo...

Parents will also feed chicks, teaching them foraging.

By 12-15 weeks, they're almost adult sized, beginning to fly & parents depart for the Fall migration.

Juveniles migrate together a few weeks later to southern waters where they'll stay for 2-3 years, returning home as full adults.

They lack the visible signs of adaptation to the cold waters of the Western US, but there are some very special qualities they have.

It's like a robin raised by ducks.

At some points, it's 'flying' underwater or swimming. At other times, it just *walks along the bottom*.

That's not how it's supposed to work, water ouzel!

I have fallen in love 😍 with this preposterous birb, the American dipper or 'water ouzel' (Cinclus mexicanus).

It's North America's only AQUATIC SONGBIRD.

The bobbing makes it look like it's trying to psyche itself up to jump into the icy-waters, but watch...
