Dr. Kiel Reese, PhD student Lydia, and lab manager Taravia visited Azalea City Montessori this week to teach students about deep sea pressure! 🌊 Students were able to assemble underwater robots 🤖 called ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), and tested them in a kiddie pool.

Ross Sea expedition team member spotlight: Dr. Katie Howe's responsibilities on this cruise include collecting sediment samples for future DNA and RNA extractions, silica incubation experiments, and social media outreach. She was also able to celebrate her birthday at her last continent!

Ross Sea expedition team member spotlight: Kristen is in charge of taking oxygen measurements in the core segments during the midnight to noon shift on this expedition. When she has free time, she loves to do arts and crafts and be outside on the bow of the ship looking for wildlife.

Lydia is the microbe team lead on this expedition. She has an incredible amount of field work and lab experience and has been keeping team morale high. When she has spare time on the ship, she likes to watch for and take photos of wildlife 🐧🐳🦭 #nsffunded

Our team in the Ross Sea has finished gathering cores from our first transect, bringing our total to 11 cores! Our microbe team and the larger coring group have worked incredibly well together, and now we have a few days off while other science groups collect their samples.

In December 2024, the Kiel Reese team went on a research cruise to the Mariana forearc! We collected fluid and sediment samples to investigate the microbial community and activity in this extreme environment #nsffunded
