I was interviewed for this great piece about sea level rise.
Solid reporting here on the scientific controversy, but I like that Evan ended with my bigger picture quote that a lot of the controversy doesn't really matter because by 2100, we will be talking about a radically different coastline.
How Soon Will the Seas Rise? | Quanta Magazine
The uniquely vulnerable West Antarctic Ice Sheet holds enough water to raise global sea levels by 5 meters. But when that will happen — and how fast — is anything but settled.

Tidewater glacier calving events inspire awe and remind us to be humble. Turns out they also stir up fjord waters and amplify melt. New paper "Calving as a Source of Acute and Persistent Kinetic Energy to Enhance Submarine Melting..." ❤️glaciology agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

The NSF-funded Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) will shut down at the end of Sept. ARCUS has been around since the late 80s; in recent years their staff had dwindled, and NSF said earlier this year that their grant would not be renewed. Another blow to polar science.

If you are in Portland this week, visit the Blackfish Gallery to see Myra Clark's Antarctic artwork.
And especially come this Friday Aug 22 at 5:30pm to hear Myra and I have a conversation about art and science in Antarctica.

A symbolic heart drawn yesterday by 300 children from the valley, at the estimated location of the Mer de Glace front in 2035... 😢

Glaciers need actions more than symbols.

Human need symbols to tell themselves that they have control over their lives 🤍

The world knows about climate change mostly because of great American researchers, and that work has been largely centered at NOAA.
Trump and Musk are now shutting down that brilliant work. They are contemptible, short-sighted, and sold out

Mer de Glace
1969 | 2024

We are a world away from the 20th century climate, already in uncharted territories, and that's just the beginning! 😱

Losing glaciers through sole human emission should make us take action 🛑

But we are apathetic...

South Cascade Glacier in Washington is a glacier that is close to my heart and soul as a glaciologist. This #glacier taught me a lot about myself, about the vulnerability of glaciers to change, and more. It was the site of the first Girls on Ice 👩‍🔬Exp in 1999. wgms.ch/goy_2025/ #glaciology ❄️🥼

My latest: The mass firings at NOAA can feel abstract. Here's what was lost at one research center -- the birthplace of climate modeling.

Fired staff became U.S. citizens to pursue these dream jobs, only to have their dreams upended.

Dismissed researchers were improving severe weather predictions
