The 51–42 partisan vote means Virginia is well on its way to joining the contagious redistricting back-and-forth between states that began when President Donald Trump requested that Texas Republicans gerrymander its electoral maps to give the GOP five more seats in the US House of Representatives.

UVA became the first public university and the fifth school overall to reject the compact.

At a press conference prior to Friday's protest, education professor Walt Heinecke called the compact the most significant threat to the mission of higher education since the McCarthy era.
