My thoughts tonight are with the people of Tumbler Ridge, B.C. A devastating day for any community & especially a tight-knit one of just a couple thousand people. May these residents & families have the time & space to mourn & heal.

Last week, Wild Revelstoke dove into the fascinating lives of woodpeckers, uniquely-engineered avians that are homebuilders for many other species, but critically depend on survival of our old-growth forests 🐦

Tune in again to 92.5FM @ 8:30 am PST next Monday, Feb. 9 📻

A warm spell late this January has brought remarkably-different temperatures & snowpack to lower elevations around Revelstoke than what I experienced here in January 2025. Not to worry, though - fresh snow continues to fall even as the degrees crank up above freezing this winter! ☃️

Possibly one of the most random stories I’ve ever written.

Someone smashed open our newspaper’s cash box… with a coconut!

But for a few dollars they stole, as I wrote, the coconut-cocked thief may have actually spent more just to buy the drupe fruit itself 🥥

One of the coolest science stories I’ve read lately, about the little-known ways that other animals sleep 💤 @apnews.com does a fantastic job (with great visuals) breaking down how penguins, frigatebirds & elephant seals each get shuteye - even while swimming & flying!

What tiny brain monitors are teaching us about extreme animal sleep habits
Thanks to miniaturized sleep labs, scientists are able to track the extreme ways animals snooze in risky environments.

Thanks Richard. It’s an ongoing story & part of the reason it remains noteworthy is critics are concerned that the ship still hasn’t been removed after nearly a year (& won’t be until at least spring). The coast guard’s latest updates also indicate they’re finding increased debris & oil slicks.

Not recent news, but this is one of my favourite pieces of journalism. Hiking in Costa Rica’s Rincón de la Vieja this month, locals told me about David Gimelfarb & his disappearance that perplexed the world. We passed the volcano summit trail he may have taken…

An eye-opening analysis about an oft-missed culprit of the climate crisis: the food we eat 🥩

I stopped eating beef this year, but this is a huge wake-up call for me & my future environmental coverage, especially if only 1/100 climate articles address food 🌿
