Analysing the energy transition at Ember. Formerly E3G and Citizens Advice

The Spanish government is reporting that the cause of the massive blackout wasn't a lack of thermal power plants - rather that they failed to provide power at the time, acting 'inappropriately'.

Funny, after fossil lobbyists were so quick to blame renewables..

Global Electricity Review 2025 | Ember
Record renewables growth led by solar helped push clean power past 40% of global electricity in 2024, but heatwave-related demand spikes led to a small increase in fossil generation.

And markets like California are showing just how powerful a combination solar + batteries can be.

Batteries are regularly meeting more than a fifth of the evening peak demand.

This has continued to climb even higher in 2025, reaching >30%.
April 8, 2025 at 7:59 AM
Batteries are increasingly key to continued solar growth

As prices fell, the global installed battery capacity almost doubled in 2024

69 GW added last year comes close to the 86 GW that had been installed to date.
April 8, 2025 at 7:59 AM
We are also seeing new markets emerge in the space of a single year, due to solar's cheap and fast-to-build nature.

Countries need updated system planning and regulatory frameworks in order to make the most of this technology.

This booming solar growth is on display across the world

Chile, Greece, Hungary reaching >20% share

in China, Brazil, Germany it was the largest source of new power

Netherlands and Denmark showing that rapid solar growth can take place at high latitudes.
April 8, 2025 at 7:59 AM
Solar power is now by some distance the fastest growing source of electricity ever

And it's showing no signs of slowing down - the growth rate seen in 2024 (+29%) was the fastest in the last six years.
April 8, 2025 at 7:59 AM
The 40% clean power milestone was reached thanks to a record rise in renewable generation, led by solar power

It added more than TWICE as much new generation as any other source.

But even more striking compared to fossil fuels - three 3x the rise in coal generation, 5x the rise in gas generation

New research!! Clean power is stepping up, and provided more than 40% of global power in 2024

@ember-energy.org Global Electricity Review is out today

Here are some of my favourite takeaways about why solar was the real star of the show this year 🌞🌞🌞 🧵

Meanwhile, solar power is expected to make up over half of new capacity added in 2025!

One third (10 GW) of this solar capacity is expected to be added in Texas!

Amid all the fluff about a new age of coal generation in the US, important to remember what is actually happening in the real world:

"Electricity generators plan to retire 12.3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in 2025, a 65% increase in retirements compared with 2024."

Excited to launch new @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social report, lifting the lid on capacity markets in 6 European countries -- funded via our energy bills.

Here's a snapshot of how the contacts have been allocated. 60% has gone to fossils, & only one-fifth to clean flex.
