Media literacy and critique that helps you get to the real story created by journalists Jan Fran and Antoinette Lattouf.
Read the news right.
Today's Karl Stefanovic suggested to Minns that Muslims who were praying when police dragged them at the Syd Herzog protest might have been "baiting" cops who should have known the footage could be "weaponised" against them.

This is how media enables rather than challenges abuses of power.

Australia is suffering from a femicide crisis. Media outlets carry a responsibility to centre the victims, avoid blame shifting, and report the killings of women and children with care and restraint. When they fail to do that, they stop informing the public and start compounding the harm.

X's Grok created at least 1.8 million sexualised images of women in just nine days, according to the NYT. Ashley St Clair — who shares a child with Elon Musk — was one of Grok’s victims. If she struggled to get deepfakes of her taken down, what hope do the rest of us have?

Be wary of media narratives that borrow the courage of Iranian protesters to cast the US as a benevolent saviour. Journos can report on Iran’s repressive regime without obscuring the interests of Israel & the US in keeping Iran destabilised, especially given how this played out in Lebanon and Syria.

Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah has issued a defamation notice to South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas over comments he made to the media comparing her to violent extremist terrorists. Several media outlets repeated those remarks without challenge and may also be exposed to defamation liability.

Market research group Roy Morgan — who usually ask about consumer confidence and voter intentions— sent this survey on Thursday for responders to choose the races or religions "most responsible" for global terrorism. Who commissioned this + decided it should be asked days after Bondi attack?

Now that the social media ban is in place, what responsibility does the media have in reporting on user compliance? Should outlets reveal how under-16s are dodging the rules, or does that just teach more kids how to do it? Etterati, what say you?

Trump's so-called war on drugs to justify alleged war crimes against Venezuela feels eerily like Bush's so-called war on terror to justify invading Iraq. The media should interrogate war mongers, not parrot them. Let's not let history repeat itself.

Brothers Fadi, 11, and Juma, 8, were killed by an Israeli drone while collecting firewood in Gaza. It's reported as the “latest test” of the ceasefire.

How many “tests” does it take to become a violation?

We presume all 352 Palestinians killed by Israel since the ceasefire began were “tests” too?

Days after new data found Aboriginal people 15x more likely to be searched by VicPol than white people, Vic police were granted powers to search people without a warrant. This is why we must be critical of hysterical reporting about "machete epidemics" — who gains from these exaggerated crime waves?

Just a friendly reminder that Channel 7's Sunrise helped resurrect Pauline Hanson's career. In 2016, Hanson was paid to appear on Sunrise at least 16 times. She then successfully re-entered politics in the federal election that year, resurrecting the One Nation party. Thanks Kochie and Sam!

Trump’s contempt hangs in plain sight. He snapped “quiet, piggy” at one female journalist who asked about Epstein, then branded another “insubordinate” for mentioning journalist Khashoggi’s murder by Saudi agents. A bleak little duet of misogyny and media hostility.

Why did The Australian use an image of Imane Khelif, a cis woman of colour, in a transphobic headline about banning trans women in sport? Imane was assigned female at birth and identifies as a woman. Paired with the use of the word "men", this headline is irresponsible, misleading and offensive.

Who at the ABC wrote, then approved, the words "ceasefire will hold" over an image of Palestinian bodies? Also, how much deference should the media give to Trump given his government continues to provide bombs to kill Palestinians?

Q: How did these explosives get there? Do these devices just grow in Gaza's soil? Or did a military put them there?

The ICJ has ruled that Israel's claims the UNRWA was infiltrated by Hamas were unfounded. To the publications that uncritically reproduced these lies and effectively laundered a genocide: when will you stop deferring to a state that has been proven to lie repeatedly?

Class, why is this headline centring the murdered woman's step count? What has that got to do with the fact that a man randomly stabbed her to death? Combatting the violence against women epidemic includes responsible media reporting.
