I've hit a bit of a logjam at Shallow Trenches/Open Skies's midpoint.
I have a chance to reveal a LOT of lore in an exciting way, and not just for ST/OP, but another, bigger story I want to tell later.
The question is, who knows what, and why do they know it?
EVERYTHING hinges on me answering that.

Gas Giant Gambit did the same for me writing it!

Just recorded a guest appearance on Jason Shannon's writer podcast! We chatted about Gas Giant Gambit, short stories, my background and my process.
And we end with a reading of one of my favorite scenes from GGG.
Should be in out Nov. 20th!
Stay tuned for details!

Today is one of those days where I try to gently remind myself that I am only under a deadline of my own choosing, and it is okay to slow down and do things right, even if it means things will take a little bit longer.

Sometimes all you need is a connection to home.
When Ele spots the blue skin of another anthozoa, she seeks them out. Who she finds isn't what she expected, but will the old man Bardo prove to be what she needs?
Read "The Old Man of the Sea" by @thelargestduck.bsky.social in this quarter's issue!

I am about to do something I find utterly horrifying. I'm going to restring my goalie glove. I have never modified any of my (*very expensive*) equipment in such a drastic way, and my whole brain is screaming at me not to screw it up...

I'm recording my guest appearance on an author podcast this week! It may even include the reading of a chapter of Gas Giant Gambit!

Gas Giant Gambit currently sits at #19 in Science Fiction: Androids, Robots & Artificial Intelligences on US Amazon.
Of the 18 ahead of it:
- 13 are Martha Wells.
- 3 are Dan Simmons.

I'm not hyperventilating. YOU'RE hyperventilating.

Today's WIP scene:
A trio of WWI soldiers take cover in a trench created by a crashed flying saucer and use heat-rays and the saucer's failing defence field to hold out against an attack by an alien invasion, complete with two walking tanks, a city-sized mothership, and one yapping French bulldog.

It's me. I'm the ageless beast growing fat.
The evenings are dark and stormy. The lights are drawn low over long, chilly nights.
This is the time of year the ageless beast we lovingly call "The Reading Team" thrives. It grows fat on the sustenance your stories provide...

...and demands ever more.

#Submissions are open until Nov. 30.

Hey!
Just got a short story acceptance letter for my flash #scifi "Visitors!" It's one of my more experimental shorts, told exclusively in news broadcasts. It's about UFOs appearing around the world, and is an allegory for immigration.
I'm proud of this one and can't wait to share it with the world!

Old Vittolo has seen a lot in the decades he's ferried folks across the river, but even he can be surprised when things don't turn out the way they seem in @jeanniemarschall.bsky.social's short fantasy story, "River Daughter."

Read it free in the Autumn 2025 issue of Perseid Prophecies!

I had to stop my writing session only about 350 words into my 2k goal yesterday because I needed to design a futuristic, alien tank reminiscent of "War of the Worlds," but not a total rip off.
After some YouTube videos, I've got my tank and I'm ready to dive back in!

Slammed into a writing wall of my own making today and won't be making my 2k word goal.
Despite being a hardcore plotter, I tend to not plan out my sci-fi tech enough in the outlining phase, and force myself to figure it out while drafting.
That happened today. Oh well.

Research time!

I haven't worked on Shallow Trenches/Open Skies, my "War of the Worlds during World War I" novel since Friday. Here's the line I left myself to start with today:

“The ship is of our design, yes,” Cela answered. “But the people are no longer mine.”

Woke up grumpy as hell.
I slept bad, a device I rely on randomly stopped working, it's not a writing day, and it's dark out.

But coffee woke me up, my device was under warranty, I will write tomorrow, and I like twilit autumn dog walks.

All's well that ends well, I guess.
