LAWLESS AMERICA. What happens to a country where crime goes unpunished? Ask Putin. Ask Trump.
January 14, 2026 at 5:27 PM
When is he going to change the name of America to Trumplandia?
December 31, 2025 at 1:55 PM
More from the NYT. The need to coddle Trump. Is this the meaning of democracy?
December 31, 2025 at 1:54 PM
Kleist’s story has a myriad of interpretations. (That’s one reason why I like it.) Bit it reminds me that truth is never simply handed over through procedure… And the mysterious machinations of the Universe guarantee nothing.
December 28, 2025 at 6:48 PM
But if God doesn’t reveal the truth, who does? Is it really up to us?
December 28, 2025 at 6:43 PM
When in doubt read Kleist. "God, what obligation lies upon Him to reveal and pronounce the truth…?"
December 28, 2025 at 4:16 PM
We might not have a democracy, but at least we have a ballroom.

Hope is for the credulous.

THE NEW AMERICA. Pardon the guilty, and murder the innocent.
December 2, 2025 at 1:07 PM
FIRST. Deploy the National Guard in cities where it is unneeded and uncalled for. SECOND. Foment violence while claiming the National Guard is there to prevent violence. THIRD. When violent acts (inevitably) occur, blame immigrants as a group. RINSE AND REPEAT.

HOW LONG WILL WE HAVE TO SUFFER? FOREVER? More bad headlines in the NYT. “Some Supporters Fear That Trump Won't
Keep Vows.” Really?! Someone needs to be given an over-credulous award. “For a president who returned to office promising to make life more affordable…it has been a significant departure…"

A NEW STRATEGY. Create a crisis and then seem to “solve” it. Abrogate Obama’s Iran deal (the JCPOA),
implement settlements in the West Bank, move the American embassy to Jerusalem. Then wait and see what happens...
November 6, 2025 at 11:26 PM
A brief respite in the newspapers today. Should I let my guard down? I don’t think so.
November 6, 2025 at 11:18 PM
POE v. MELVILLE, The spirit of perverseness v. natural depravity/ Why not both? (The Black Cat v. Billy Budd)
November 6, 2025 at 11:14 PM
WHEN IN DOUBT READ MELVILLE. Though the man’s even temper…would seem to intimate a mind peculiarly subject to the law of reason...he would seem to riot in complete exemption from that law, having little to do with reason...than to employ it as an ambidexter implement for effecting the irrational.

It’s a toss up. I can’t believe what’s happening, and I don’t want to believe what’s happening. Ah, that admixture of denial and incredulity.
October 23, 2025 at 1:39 PM
I like alliteration but can this really be her name? Heather Honey, an election denier, has been put in charge of “election integrity.” When “we” elected Trump, what did we think was going to happen? Well… The denial of truth, the suspension of law, among other things…

No one doubts that American health care is deeply inadequate and overly expensive. Why did we decide to put health care in the hands of insurance companies. Are we out of our minds? (Yes.)
October 23, 2025 at 1:33 PM
READING AGAIN THE NYT. Should I stop? An article about Sam Terblanche. Dead. Despite the usual equivocal prose, one point is clear. Medicine has become hopelessly bureaucratized. Has insurance and insurance claims turned doctors into box-checkers with stethoscopes? www.nytimes.com/2025/10/05/w...
It’s Just a Virus, the E.R. Told Him. Days Later, He Was Dead.

Charlie Silver wrote an extraordinary Ph.D. thesis on Kripke’s theory of proper names. To me, it opened a whole new world about modalities and reference. It is part of my criticism of the work of Thomas Kuhn. How stable is reference? Is it on shifting sands or an impregnable fortress? Neither?
October 21, 2025 at 10:14 PM
My close friend Charles L Silver died yesterday, He was my closest friend, and it is an incredible loss.

Is the American idea of how to deal with fascism: to embrace it?
October 8, 2025 at 6:14 PM
We are in the grip of not just fascism… OK, that isn’t OK, but also in the grip of extraordinary cupidity and stupidity. People who know nothing control everything.

The Ukrainian Night is my kind of book. History through deeply personal accounts. It deepened my understanding of the Maidan. Thank you, Marci.

THE NEW BRO MILITARY. He who can do the most pushups wins. Maybe Hegseth should challenge Putin to a pushup contest.
