WHEN IN DOUBT READ MELVILLE. Though the man’s even temper…would seem to intimate a mind peculiarly subject to the law of reason...he would seem to riot in complete exemption from that law, having little to do with reason...than to employ it as an ambidexter implement for effecting the irrational.

Charlie Silver wrote an extraordinary Ph.D. thesis on Kripke’s theory of proper names. To me, it opened a whole new world about modalities and reference. It is part of my criticism of the work of Thomas Kuhn. How stable is reference? Is it on shifting sands or an impregnable fortress? Neither?

WHAT A NIGHTMARE. NYT Sunday Opinion, Maureen Dowd weighs in on AI and the end of the world; Nicholas Kristof tells us that withdrawal of US aid has put African women at risk; the Editorial Board opines on the politicization of justice… Nothing good here. (And a lot of bad.)

DO THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT IDEA? Clearly, Pam Bondi and I have differing ideas of what we mean by an independent Justice Department. But it seems we also have differing ideas about the meaning of the word “independent.” Do words have any meaning anymore?

IS STATING THE OBVIOUS A CRIME? SHOULD STATING THE OBVIOUS BE PUNISHED? Ask Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel. The Bill of Rights prohibits the government from curbing free speech. But it does not prohibit corporations. OK. What if the government tells corporations to curb free speech? What then?
