What the hell is he building in there?
He has subscriptions to those magazines
He never waves when he goes by
He's hiding something from the rest of us
He's all to himself
I think I know why

This little sweetheart, in the early morning hours, scratching at my back door, beckons me to come outside, leads me to this dark corner, looks over her shoulder, whispers “Death to tyrants”

Still Small Voice May 25: Who do you think you are?

I think I am a Utopian. It’s unpopular these days. Nothing haunts our imagination like the visions of dystopia streaming from our feeds and platforms and cinemas. Is it because we’re closer to that reality than to the world that ought to be?

No but seriously, what's he building in there?

I am both insufferably proud and deeply unqualified to be presenting a paper on conspiracy paranoia and spiritual practices at Harvard Divinity School’s Evolution of Spirituality conference this week.

Here we are suspended—stuck—between Christ and Krishna. Jesus, ever, Turn the other cheek, Love your enemy, Surrender to meekness. Krishna all Loose the arrow. Not “Join the fight” so much as “Light the fire.”

Things I Learned While Building a Conspiracy Theory: UUCSF Sunday March 30th 10:30AM. There will be a smattering of the Still Small Voice experiment, but mostly I will be just old-fashioned preachifying.

Everyone in this carnival is a clown. Every single one of us. If you’re lucky, you know it. If you’re really lucky—I imagine—you’re doing some of it on purpose sorry with intention. Intentionality. Inten—whatever.

2024 showed one thing clearly: People are hard to understand. I get the need for chaos and the fear of insignificance, petty vindictiveness, being too exhausted for empathy. But I do not understand willful ignorance or the celebration of cruelty, nor mean-spirited stupidity as a political movement.

Jimmy Carter was a great leader. Even in his later years, and despite inhabiting a deeply traditional set of values, like decency and service, he was an innovative thinker. Haunting Trump’s inauguration day like that took serious planning, determination, and a certain shade of Southern humor.

Donald Trump will win a Nobel Peace Prize for ending the war in Ukraine and for something something Gaza. I make this prediction because my predictions never come true. Let there be peace, let there be peace, but let not the credit and praise fall into the lap of the worst kinds of people.

WHAT IS THE HUMAN BEING? The Still Small Voice experiment, Dec 22 The Church 10 AM

As we conclude this year-long experiment in gathering and reflection, we arrive at the question that informs all the other questions: What is the Human Being?

So, what are we?

Still, Small Voice experiment
“What do we give when we give thanks?”
Really though, what is it that we give when we give thanks? What is gratitude? If it's a feeling, it is not like other feelings. It is, strangely, a feeling that we must learn. A feeling that we must cultivate, craft, refine.
