The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Two (2!) essays, one written, one as video, on the complexities of "biological gender" from Julia Serano. For, you know, extra credit. And learning!

If the template on commenting on passport policies for trans folks looked as garbled to you as it does to me, just go to the link in this next comment:

Crosspost from FB, slightly condensed:

I would say that if you give a damn about trans folk then it is time to speak up, but truly, if you give a damn about anyone who is being targeted by this administration, it is time to speak up. Because it will not end here.

It's Black History Month no matter who says otherwise.

Here is a short film from 1970 on James Baldwin. It will tell you whether you'd like to read more of him or not.

Myself, I have watched it more than once: I fall in love every single time.

The NYT article does not link to the report itself, so I went looking. Here is the DOJ announcement with a brief summary. A link to a page where you can download the full report is in the first sentence.

This is excellent and worth reading right now that you just got a boring Wrapped that didn’t even do good numbers. It is relatively painless to move your playlists to another streaming site and they’re all, every single one, superior to Spotify.

Five minutes after I created my first email address (1994, I think: catdoc@u.wasington.edu, which is no longer a functioning domain, much less an email address) I checked my inbox several times to see if the internet would find me right away.

It did not.

I maybe should go eat lunch.

I suppose I should say something so it is apparent that I am here.

If I believed that I were anywhere--or anyone--in particular, this would be much easier. So:

"Hi. I am called Erik."

That's all I got at the moment.

Oh. It's raining in Seattle.

Also, I have never done short-form posting well.
