only 7 points in 9 transition possessions, which is well below their typical volume.

Wisconsin did a great job of controlling tempo (and scoring a lot).

I probably undersold the first part some — which is mostly scheme. Wisconsin deserves a ton of credit for taking Michigan out of its base scheme.

From there, Michigan’s defensive execution the last ~15 minutes just wasn’t good enough.
People are going to talk about Wisconsin's threes, guarding a stretch 5, their pick & pop... and those were all factors, but Michigan lost that game because after it went to switching 1 thru 5, it miscommunicated switches all over the place and wasn't able to contain the ball

This is best illustrated by Michigan's (otherwise) elite 2-point defense

Michigan hasn't allowed an opponent to shoot over 47% on twos all season -- Wisconsin shot 56%

Wisconsin's bigs making 3s gave space for its guards to get downhill and finish at the basket & draw fouls

Whenever Morez Johnson enters the draft, he should compare himself to Isaiah Stewart at every opportunity

"Guys, remember shot fakes. They're going to jump at everything in the paint. Our eyes have to be up. If you can finish, dunk on their head. If it's not there, shot fake it and go through them..."

Unsurprisingly. Good call

Diabolical timing for @kenpom.com to drop a new feature on the site — average 2-point attempt distance.

Michigan ranks 27th in average 2PA distance on offense and (unexpectedly) 1st on defense.

Michigan played at a ridiculously high standard in the three games in Vegas that seemed nearly impossible to continue.

They have somehow reached or surpassed that level in every game since.

Yeah they used two in the first 4 mins of the 2nd half and another around the 2 minute mark so they were out. Can’t challenge without a TO

Bennett Stirtz was responsible for a ton of defensive breakdowns in the 2nd half and Simon called it out tactfully. Hope he’s on air more.

That Iowa-Iowa State game was super fun and a tactical chess match.

Miles Simon is a fantastic color commentator. I can’t remember watching one of his games. He was correctly calling out everything happening in real time and adding insightful analysis on top of it.

But Cason’s original man stays with him, too. Cadeau sees this, quickly inbounds to Morez and sprints to the front of the rim.

Great pass from Morez for the easy bucket.

That brings us to last night. Villanova had the set well-scouted.

The inbounder defender — Lewis — switches onto Cason as he cuts off the screens to prevent the corner 3.

Here’s the same set for a McKenney three vs. Middle Tennessee.

Michigan has run this for Nimari Burnett, too.

Michigan loves this “box” baseline out of bounds set to generate a 3 in the strong side corner.

Here’s Trey McKenney running off screens for a 3 vs. Rutgers.

Why a play last night vs. Villanova shows Michigan’s high IQ, unselfishness, and the X’s and O’s chess match happening throughout games.

Let’s break it down 🧵:

Rutgers is not good, but one thing they’ve been great at is two-point defense. Rutgers has held opponents to 45% on twos this season. They’ve played Purdue, Tennessee, and Notre Dame and limited all 3 to under 53%.

Michigan shot 71% on twos in the 1st half.
