Happy publication day to this article I started working on in 2017. I'm quite proud of this one but even more thrilled that it is out in the wild now for all to see.

Remember those stories that tried to downplay RFK Jr’s deadly campaign against vaccines by saying that the Trump administration would make everybody healthy through access to fresh unprocessed food?

How does canceling a billion dollars worth of local food for school and food banks fit with that?

States have been notified that they will not receive 2025 funding for schools to buy food from nearby farms.

This is a truly devastating development for so many people and sectors. I can only imagine how hard-won these contracts and purchasing programs were.

I'll take being featured in this article as a sign that now is a good time to break my social media hiatus and (re)introduce myself and my work on here.

This article is a good lil' teaser of my article coming out in #EnvironmentalHumanities, so more to come on that front!
Food insecurity is not a simple issue, and a big part of the problem is the way we talk about it — including the term “food desert.” The term oversimplifies a complex issue and diverse lived experiences, while relying heavily on erroneous ideas about deserts. @gracehussain.bsky.social explains:
What ‘Food Desert’ Means — and Why the Term Is Misleading
New research outlines the anti-Black and anti-Indigenous assumptions of the term.

Hey folks!
I (@aasewell.bsky.social) have created an account to think on sociology, as a discipline, can engage the issues of our time. Te account will build capacity through three stages:

1) people (sociologists),
2) research (studies), and
3) interpretation (science).

Let me elaborate.
