Such an approach could help to accelerate the #transition to the #circulareconomy that we so urgently need.

To appeal to those values, policy makers can promote CCBs by publicizing how our current economic system and one’s own actions contribute to environmental problems & explaining the potential effects of CCBs that urge others to act to reduce environmental problems.

The researchers also discovered that people with egoistic values (caring about wealth, power and achievement) are more likely to engage in CCBs, potentially because they value influence and CCBs enable them to influence the behaviors of others.

And values play a role, too: people with strong #biospheric values (caring about the #environment) are likely to engage in CCBs.

The researchers studied which factors affect CCB so that those factors could inform decisions about effective interventions. They found that the more people feel responsible for and capable of taking #proenvironmental action, the more strongly motivated and likelier they are to ultimately do so.

However, in their paper, Pacheco, Van Der Werff and Steg found that people rarely engage in these behaviors, which means there is much untapped potential for systemic change through more citizen action in the future.

And to urge governments to contribute to #systemicchange, individuals can contact their elected officials and tell them that they want policies that make it easier to engage in circular behavior.

For example, if your friend says they got the broken zipper on their coat replaced instead of buying a whole new garment, you can praise them for making a #circular choice.

That doesn't mean we sit around and wait for system change that enables circular consumption. We can accelerate that process through circular citizenship behaviours (CCBs): personally or collectively influencing other people, businesses & governments to take action to contribute to system change.

Many people are motivated to engage in circular consumption. But our current linear societal and economic systems make it unattractive, if not nearly impossible, thereby inhibiting people from acting as circularly as they would like.

In order to reduce environmental problems, we need to transition to a #circulareconomy, where all societal actors narrow (reduce resource use), slow (use resources longer) and close (recycle resources at the end of a product’s lifetime) the loop of resource use.

PhD Isabel Pacheco and co-authors Ellen van der Werff and Linda Steg found that people rarely engage in #circular citizenship behaviours. How can we access all that untapped potential for #systemicchange through more citizen action in the future?

Here's a thread on one of our recent papers🧵

For project developers, informing #citizens and consulting them for feedback is often an afterthought. Our colleague Goda Perlaviciute has found that getting people involved from the earliest stages of a project and taking their input seriously can be a make or break approach for #acceptability.

When it comes to projects facilitating the #sustainable #transition, citizens's trust in a developer can derive from either their competence (experience) or their integrity (transparency and principles).

Our research has found that integrity-based trust makes a bigger difference, but both matter.
What is more trustworthy: integrity or competence?

Design can drive socially-desirable behaviour change, so our colleagues tested whether environmentally-focused packaging designs promoted recycling. They found that intention to #recycle, and actual recycling, increased with stronger #biospheric values. gep.psychopen.eu/index.php/ge...
