This is a really great breakdown of part of why I as a mechanics gremlin love more mechanically inclined systems. The drive of mastery as a player as well as the narrative implications of the character represented by that mastery hits at such a deep level that I can't get with a rules lite game.
I didn't just write a defense of rules light games. I rebut common criticisms of rules heavy games too! The only hot take here is TTRPGs are wonderful and variety is great! Come see why I think rules heavy games don't deserve the heat.
