To mark the second anniversary of the ongoing humanitarian crisis, “From Sudan to Seattle” will provide space for local Sudanese to share their stories of survival and migration, acknowledge the conflict’s connections to local African and Sudanese populations, and offer insights on the current state of US-Sudan relations. Dr. Ushari Khalil is a human rights advocate who focuses on the rights of internally displaced populations and children affected by armed conflict in Sudan. Dr. Khidir Haroun is a former Sudanese Ambassador to the United States. Dr. Haroun currently serves as a Dean of Faculty at the International University of Africa. Dr. Christopher Tounsel is an associate professor of History and Director of the African Studies Program at the University of Washington. Dr. Mehari Worku is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of Washington. Yasir Zaidan is a PhD Candidate in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Samira Mohamed is a Sudanese pharmacy student and mother who escaped from Khartoum to Port Sudan when the war began in April 2023.

This lunchtime conversation will focus on the use of FOIA requests in immigration research and the pursuit of social justice with Angelina Snodgrass Godoy (Helen H. Jackson Endowed Chair in Human Rights and Director at the Center for Human Rights) and Phil Neff (UWCHR Research Coordinator). In conversation with Diana Ruíz (Cinema & Media Studies) and Vanessa Freije (Jackson School of International Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies), Godoy and Neff will discuss some of the toughest cases investigated and most revealing reports published by the UW Center for Human Rights. This event forms part of the Digital Border Technologies and Media Cross-disciplinary Research Cluster, which explores the use of digital methods in opposition to detention, separation, and inequities produced by settler colonial borders. Registeration Required: bit.ly/foia-workshop-sp25. Angelina Snodgrass Godoy (Jackson School of International Studies and Law, Societies, & Justice) is Helen H. Jackson Endowed Chair in Human Rights and Director at the Center for Human Rights at the University of Washington. A sociologist by training, her research focuses on human rights in Central and Latin America. Phil Neff is Research Coordinator for the University of Washington Center for Human Rights. At UWCHR, Phil has managed research and communications for the Center’s project supporting survivors of war crimes in El Salvador as well as the initiative working alongside local immigrant rights organizations to monitor impacts of immigration enforcement in Washington State.
