Y’all science is so cool.

(A) I’m at a quantum workshop in Chattanooga, cool in itself, and the reception is at the aquarium.

(B) These two fish are arapaima! They are massive. Gretch (lead of my fish paper) lived on a boat in the Amazon tracking them for nearly a year for her MS thesis.

Side bar for bluesky - I love that we were able to use dancing people as the icons in the final version. This captures some of the underlying joy I have in getting to model :)
The paper's goal is to present a framework to support the process of applied optimization model development.

We've observed that much modeling occurs in an iterative, though ad hoc way. The paper aims to provide a theoretical grounding for this process.

I.e., to support the figure's right panel.

New paper:

“Developing Optimization Models with Cognitive Systems Engineering”

This is the result of Tyler O’Brien’s MS thesis, co-advised with Sudeep Hedge and in collaboration with Steven Foster.

Clemson 😅😅😅

Ended up losing by two.

It’s March!!
Clemson has 13 total points at halftime. Tigers have turned the ball over 10 times and are 1-of-15 from three.

This article gives some more information on the REU cancellations this summer.

It sounds like the current cancellations are coming from programs that were expecting to be renewed but weren't this cycle. More might be coming with the general budget volatility.

For transparency:

At this point, Clemson IE's REU is still on for this summer. We haven't heard anything to the contrary, thankfully. I'll keep y'all posted if that changes.

More NIH news:
Every university I’ve worked at has had a rate around 50-60% for federal grants. This pays for the entire research structure of the universities. Private grants don’t pay this, which is why universities need federal grants.
⚠️ Effective Monday 2/10/25, NIH indirect rate capped at 15%. Applies to existing & future grants.

—> Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you.

Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

The Australian Society of Operations Research (ASOR) just uploaded recordings of most of their seminars over the past 5 years.

Because of time zones, I haven't gotten to watch any live, but I'm looking forward to watching a few now that they're available:

Update to US health agency external communications being paused:

These directives also appear to include grant-funding mechanisms (e.g., NIH study sections and councils) as well.

It's a big deal for US health agencies to pause external communications. I hope this is resolved immediately.
New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH.

No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts.

And no indication how long the pause will last.

Great news: Clemson IE is hosting an NSF REU site this coming summer.

The theme is H-CORE: Human-Centered Operations Research and Engineering.

If you know an undergrad who may like research related to humans, systems, and analytics, this could be a great program for them.

thank you, Sophie, this helped me a lot; over the years, I tried to distiguish between something like motivation -> applicability -> is it implemented -> they make money from it, as different degrees of how close theoretical considerations are to practice :)

I would say that this article is about the standard of evidence required for statements of the form "X is applicable to Y". When writing papers we have a very low standard of evidence, whereas @jeremykun.com argues that only the highest quality of evidence suffices. (1/4) 🧵
I would like to understand what you see in this article, how would you summarize its message?

Context behind this one:

Gretchen (fish scientist!) is one of my best friends, and one night she mentioned doing AHP to rank threats for this paper. I offered to help, and here we are 🐟

It's really cool to me how concepts of resilience and mitigation show up across disciplines.
New applied paper: Adaptive capacities of inland fisheries facing anthropogenic pressures

Big question: what does resilience and vulnerability look like for global inland fisheries?
