Lights Out for Birds ✨🐦‍⬛

Artificial light at night kills over a billion migratory birds each year. Light pollution is reversible and we can all make a difference now.

Find out more in my article on light pollution and birds in this month’s Birdwatch @birdguides.bsky.social

We'll be interested to see how many Short-eared Owls cross the North Sea and spend the winter in Britain. 🦉 Read about BTO’s research tracking Short-eared Owls here ➡️ bit.ly/TrackingSEO #Ornithology #RaptorResearch

Foggy full moon; heady ivy flower scented night air; crazy owl calls; rustling hedgehogs; last of the chirping crickets; listening out for Redwings… I love October 🧡🍂🦉

New record for the oldest Barn Owl in Britain and Ireland! 😮 At 18 years old the female was ringed in 2007 in Nottinghamshire when she was a chick before being recorded again in Lincolnshire this year! Read the full story ➡️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/a... #Ornithology #BirdRinging 🪶

Poorest breeding season on record for Kestrels and owls in #Wiltshire.

Most Barn Owls haven’t laid eggs yet due to shortage of food. Many adults are in moult so unlikely to breed this year. Kestrels that have bred are feeding their young with birds, and broods are small 🪺🦉

When was the last time you saw a wildflower meadow bursting with so much colour, teeming with 🦋🐝🪲🐛, orchestrated by chirping crickets and breeding birds?

Heard this beautiful nightingale singing in a park in Budapest 🎶

A tragedy that the UK’s nightingale population has declined by 90%. They used to sing in our parks! Decline linked to breeding & winter habitat quality as shown by BTO’s latest GPS tracking study ➡️ www.bto.org/our-science/...

Heard a Kestrel in Budapest!

Warm spring weather has finally arrived here. Blossom everywhere! I’m desperate to hear Nightingales sing on Margit Sziget (island in Danube). Wherever I go, it’s always the birds that make a place 🌸🎶🐦‍⬛

A privilege to be in Kiskunság National Park in Hungary watching Szabolcs Kókay paint a Black-tailed Godwit. So many beautiful waders here. Curlews calling all around ❤️

Heard my first ever Scops Owl last night! They’ve just arrived back in Catalonia after overwintering in Africa. Five were calling back to our Scops Owl whistle calls! 🦉💚

Wonderful to watch this Water Rail foraging along the banks of the River Chew. Winter is the best season to spot this secretive bird.

Did you know that Tawny Owls are less vocal on cloudy nights and when it is raining, but more active on nights when the moon is fuller? 🌕 🌧️ This was discovered from data collected for the BTO Tawny Owl Calling Survey. #Winterwatch #Ornithology #Birds

Golden sunset waves at The Cobb in Lyme Regis. I love it here especially in winter. Turnstones, Rock Pipets and wagtails meander along the harbour wall, stopping now and again to look out to sea.

I love midwinter. The warming sun, unfurling daylight, displaying Buzzards, clattering Jackdaws, emerging snowdrops, frosty cheeks, tree silhouettes at sunset, hooting owls, barking foxes, twinkly starry skies, and Orion ✨

Tawny Owls are quiet tonight as the snow falls in #Bath. The trees in my local park look beautiful with their shadowy branches backlit by the snowy sky. I felt like I was the only one there until I could smell a fox sitting under a hedgerow 🤍🦊
