Fantastic thread about the Roman Empire's relevance (or not) for our contemporary world 👇
Okay my body chose violence* today and unfortunately I can't lounge about watching TV and the news is... the news... so I'm going to try to talk a bit about my book (I wrote a book! It's real! It's out soon!) - and just why people think about the Roman empire so very, very often.

I’ve had to read a certain inaugural address multiple times today for research purposes (it is a perfect case study on resurgent American imperialism for my current research funding application..) and it makes me sick. I can only imagine how 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ folks in the US feel. Love and solidarity!

The past, as always, employed politically…what mirror are the stones holding up to this time round….? As archaeologists we should indeed be very careful not to provide fuel for such ideas
When in fact, all the archaeological evidence points to cultural assimilation.

This is media manipulation at its very worst. And, it’s politically dangerous.

I’m calling it. It’s beyond time for the post-processual generation to retire. They simply don’t understand the science. Nor the material.
I didn't think it could get worse.

It got worse. 😫
