Today is the 74th anniversary of Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard Round The World" which sent the Giants to the 1951 World Series. Afterward, Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca told reporters, "For the first 60 feet that was a great pitch."

It's a Phil Trifecta on today's A1! First, Phil goes dark on the local real estate market . Lower left is a teaser for Phil's ComicCon coverage. And at right is Phil's cosplay of Ozzy at the 2024 ComicCon. Phil does it all!

"One small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind."

July 20, 1969: Men walk on the moon. Difficult to imagine in 2025 just what an amazing achievement this was. You watched the images and felt so proud to be American.

On July 15, 1834 the Spanish Inquisition was abolished, something nobody expected.

July 12, 1979 was Disco Demolition Night (and nickel beer night) on the South Side. 50,000 fans brought disco records to be blown up in the outfield between games of a White Sox/Tigers doubleheader. After the explosion, inebriated fans rushed the field and rioted. The Sox forfeited Game 2.

You can tell MAGA is terrified of Zohran Mamdani because they already are calling him a "dangerous socialist" and "muslim extremist" (I saw both on social media today). Attention Democrats: This is the guy and the message you should be promoting. The status quo is dead.

The Constitution was enshrined as the foundation of American Democracy on June 21, 1788. It endures because its ideas are more powerful than anyone who seeks to destroy it.

Thank you Brian Wilson. Baton Rouge 1964. The radio plays "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around", followed later by "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations". A young boy dreams of escaping a stultifying place into a life in the sunshine. Been here 40 years now.

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of AA. June 10, 1935 -- the first day of Dr. Bob's sobriety -- is the occasion. The work of these two men saved millions of lives.

55 years ago today - May 2, 1970 - national guard soldiers opened fire on unarmed Vietnam protesters at Kent State, ending these four promising lives. The soldiers later faced no discipline and zero consequences. Never forget.

As if anybody needed more proof the Catholic Church is morally bankrupt. The Vatican's holy middle finger to all the children whose horrific abuse Mahony so blithely endorsed.

Happy 100th birthday The Great Gatsby! What many consider The Great American Novel was a flop back in 1925, but it beat on, a boat with the current, borne ceaselessly into the future.

Hey @phoefsutton.bsky.social, caught this little gem last night and thought of you. Franchot Tone is a Marlowe clone in a caper with crackling dialogue and too many dames to keep track of. The end is a real hoot. Do you know it?

On Opening Day, let's remember the great Dizzy Dean, blazing fastballer and all-around goofball for the Cardinals. Game 4 of the 1934 World Series, Dean on the mound gets beaned by a comebacker. Cleared after tests at the hospital, the next day's headline was "X-Rays Of Dean's Head Show Nothing".

As opening day nears, let's remember the tale of Clarence "Climax" Blethen. Playing for the Knoxville Smokies in 1933 Blethen singled, and on the way to 1st he put his dentures in his back pocket. Trying to steal 2nd he slid and the dentures bit him so deeply he had to leave the game. Play ball!
