The first prototype for my RxDecks playing cards/pharmacology study tool just arrived! I’m so proud of how they turned out! I’m hoping to have all 6 decks (312 drugs) ready to go by October. They’ve been an idea in my head for over a year, and I’m so excited to see the finished product!

I spent an entire hour the other day in clinic discussing, making med adjustments, and educating a patient with some complicated chronic diseases. It was a great conversation, and the patient left feeling confident with the new plan. But I recognize that time is a luxury in most settings. #PharmSky

Pharmacy Pearl of the Day (PPotD): Even if your patient needs 2000 mg a day of metformin, don’t start there. Do 500 mg HS x 1 week, then 500 mg BID. Then 500 mg QAM + 1000 mg HS, then 1000 mg BID. Let their gut adjust, because if the GI effects are too much, they’re not gonna take it. #PharmSky

Pharmacy pearl of the day (#PPotD):
If you’re taking iron supplements, you’ll get best results if you take it every other day. Even better if you wash it down with orange juice. (The vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron.)

I wonder if anybody would be interested in pharmacy pearl posts. I tend to assume everybody already knows, but I guess it might be helpful to 1 or 2 of you. So here’s one:

I’m so glad clinicians are working on improving access to medications, but I’m curious why there are no pharmacists included as an author. I feel like they could have provided a valuable perspective. #PharmSky

How can clinicians help their patients afford costly medications?? 💊💰

In a recent JAMA review, we outlined an algorithm and talk about the pros and cons of several options, including copay cards, pharmacy coupons, and more.

So at the other site I mostly stuck to pharmacy stuff, but goodness, we’re all out there living full lives with varied interests, so why in the world wouldn’t we talk about that stuff too?

Fun fact: I used to be a professional Christmas caroler.
