Examining details of the central Negev geological map (Israel).
In the background, an outcrop of the margins of a paleolake that existed in the Pliocene (Kuntila member, Arava Fm.), under different drainage settings and less arid climatic conditions than today.

Pieces of (probably) #Hematite found along one of the #Dead_Sea margin faults. Likely formed as iron-rich thermal fluids flowed through the fault and precipitated these minerals along the way. 🪨 #Geology #Minerals #FaultZones

🧵 1/3 Very excited to share here our new publication in PNAS! We reveal how drainage divides don't migrate steadily but in intermittent pulses, likely linked to paleoclimate shifts 🌍

#Sedimentologists aboard! 🚨
Is this a submarine channel or a karstic void filled with sediment?
Limited within the white lines are chalk and marl beds, the surrounding rock is limestone, and above the blue line is calcrete formed long after the underlying units.

Winter in Masada, the Judean Desert.
The closeup shows a cliff-parallel fracture following a weakness zone in the rock, formed by a calcite vein that began as a filled crack. Over time, the section between the fracture and the cliff will collapse, making the fracture the new cliff face.
