Fantastic news *just in* from @resetproject.bsky.social that a targeted prevention intervention delivered in schools in low socio-economic areas reduced psychopathology 1 year later - a moderate but robust effect with high acceptability & low attrition. Check out @thementalelf.bsky.social ⬇️for more!
So the ReSET trial has found positive effects, says Pasco #ReSETMentalHealth

It took time to see these benefits in young people.

There are some important lessons here for school based mental health work.

Is CBT equally effective across all mental disorders?

This unified meta-analysis looked at 375 RCTs & nearly 33,000 people with 11 different diagnoses.

Spoiler: it’s not a one-size-fits-all therapy. 🧠

Lots of debate about the potential harms of universal school interventions but we've barely scratched the surface of considering what this might look like in low-resource settings where mental health support outside of schools may not exist. Anyone researching these issues, please do connect!
All the negative effects to date have been found in high-income countries.

There is an interesting question here about whether there might be a kind of Goldilocks effect where, when awareness is low/stigma is high (like in some LMIC schools), then universal interventions are helpful...

Mixed methods are super popular in mental health right now but there are unfortunately many systemic barriers to using this approach.

We were inspired to write this piece to help researchers to overcome these challenges and as a call to action for institutions, funders, and journal editors⬇️
NEW PAPER: How do we advance mixed methods in mental health research?

Mixed methods are widely recognised as valuable in mental health research, but aren’t as embedded as we’d hope and there are a lot of challenges that individual researchers and teams must navigate… 1/

We talk a lot about why adolescent girls report more low mood and anxiety, and why this might be getting worse.

But what do girls themselves think might explain this? As you might have guessed, we don’t really know.

I'm going to say it, there is a worrying lack of curiosity in my profession of clinical psychology about some popular & yet highly questionable ideas about trauma. Van der Kolk's book, polyvagal theory, deterministic ideas that kids exposed to trauma are "brain damaged"... where do we go from here?
An *excellent* and damning review of The Body Keeps the Score that is very much worth a read.

“Implying that sexually abused girls have an entirely different developmental pathway […] “is bullshit.””
“The Body Keeps the Score stigmatizes survivors, blames victims, and depoliticizes violence. While masquerading as care for survivors, it creates a hierarchy where marginalized victims are even more marginalized.” My latest, for @motherjones.
