I am a 70-something Queer. (Trans woman and lesbian). My writing and my art help keep me sane in a world that has gone further south than I would have believed possible a decade ago. You can find me at elbethe.net.

To the trans-kids facing puberty:

A lot of my poems are pretty depressing, but remember when I was growing up — the 50’s and 60’s. When I was born the word ‘transsexual’ didn’t exist, let alone ‘transgender’. These poems are from *my* life, not *yours*, though, I admit, things are looking grim.
Been reading more than writing lately, so I'll share this:

I go where I love and where I am loved,
into the snow;

I go to the things I love
with no thought of duty or pity

Uploaded a bunch of new poems to the website (after revamping it a bit) mostly old stuff I unearthed in my archives, but a few recent ones.

Two petitions one supporting the total elimination of trans people, the other signed by cis women opposing transphobia

No 1. took SIX YEARS to get 39,500 signatures.

No 2. took just 10 weeks to get 40,000 signatures

Now tell me transphobia is more popular than trans people’s human rights.

New poem up on the website. Actually, quite a few -- I've been lax about posting notices. Sorry.

I thought I´d put a face to the guy who ´inspired´ my poem ¨If We Allow It¨. These are the people who are running out country now. The may, at times, be at odds with each other, but they´re all heading for the same world -- one that rewards them for their arrogance.

It's 3am and I'm awake and writing poetry because I just needed to get this out of my system. I can't see any other path forward for us that doesn't involve going back to the 50's and suffering. If we're going to suffer, let's be loud about it.

New poem up. You might want to wait for a better news day to read it, though. OTOH, how long before that happens?

Been going through my old poems and putting them up on a website. Just getting started, really, but found this one: elbethe.net/Awakening/. With all the distractions headed our way, I kind of lost lock on what to do. This reminded me.

::sigh:: That's what I get for posting too quickly. Something I *know* will be misinterpreted.

Like Any Other Queer

Do not wag your finger at me and say
“you can’t just choose to be a woman”.
This is not a fantasy or some idle whim.
I was born knowing, that I was not
the boy that everyone said I was.
Do you really think we choose this?

“Enforcers from the Harlot’s Guild have come to the courthouse dressed in heels and prepared for combat” is something so cool it sounds like it’s from a D&D campaign but no. Incredible things are happening in CDMX
[Mexico City, Mexico]

Following the attempted murder of a trans woman. Cops just let the alleged perp go. So actionists from the Mexican sex workers union stormed the judicial building.

This is going to get me in trouble, I know it is, but I am sick unto death of cis-people driving the conversation about trans-kids and gender affirming care. I am sick of the lies, of the refusal of so many cis-people to even listen to us. Especially the ones making the laws.

I have the usual angel/demon pair that sit on my shoulders and whisper advice. The angel is saying I shouldn’t write poetry when I’m this angry. The demon is saying, “Go for it.” Tonight I’m listening to the demon. We’ll see how it goes.

Fuck cis-people who think they know what’s best for us.

River

Identity and experience are different things
though each informs the other.

Identity flows like water in a river,
channeled by the banks of experience
but shaping them as well.

Whitewash

“Investigate the harms of gender affirming care”.

This tells me all I need to know.

That you have already
reached your conclusion
and will now seek to justify it.

No matter how much
you have to cook the data.

It is nothing more than
whitewash for your bigotry.

Tranny Tranny Tranny

The words come out with such force
that I can see the vitriol
spewing forth like spittle.

You imagine that this hurts,
but I have been queer for so long
that I know how reclaiming works.

I wake up every morning around 4 or 5, usually out of a nightmare. I often run on a mere 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night. I am exhausted, but a couple of hours spent searching for sleep sometimes proves productive on the poetry front. I think I’m getting the hang of channeling my anger…

Surgery was a Resurrection.
A chance to walk in the sun,
after decades in darkness,
and to find that the mirror
was no longer my enemy.

The closet is a coffin.
A place where the soul screams
and the heart claws at the lid,
begging for the acceptance
that you take for granted.
