Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Emanuele Orru' at LINNC Paris 2025 about outpatient migration of neurotech and endovascular treatments. We are doing this in Buffalo, and I do not doubt that this is just the beginning for this groundbreaking practice.

A first for UBNS at our Atlas Surgery Center, as we started using the first Gamma Knife in an ambulatory neurosurgery center in the U.S.

This technology will enable our team to treat deep-seated brain pathologies with unparalleled precision.

I was recently asked about the use of sugar substitutes and the impact they can have on brain health.

As we head into the holiday season here is my advice:
🥧Enjoy that festive meal
🥗Balance it with healthy options during the week
🏃‍♂️Get up and move to stimulate your brain

@KimKardashian recently announced she was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.

We are partnering with The Missy Project to find out why women could be at a greater risk for this.

This will be a first-of-its-kind research project, and potential could be a game-changer.

Brain surgery in particular has shown to significantly impact families. While having these procedures done in an ambulatory setting isn’t a magic wand for these effects in general, I have found that it does reduce the stress of the procedure itself.

At LINNC Paris 2025 this past summer, I spent some time with Emanuele Orru' to discuss the outpatient migration of neurotech and endovascular treatment. Here’s a clip of this conversation, where I highlight one key point: Most patients, by far, would prefer to be in an outpatient setting.

I was asked to name my top three suggestions for improving or maintaining brain function and here's my answer:

🧠Exercise your brain just like you would any other muscle
🚲Physically move your body
🥗Eat a healthy diet

I’m thrilled to be part of this study evaluating the pre- and post-procedure use of portable MRI. We’ll be looking at its ability to detect post-op complications and how it can be best integrated into the surgical workflow. View the full press release here: http://bit.ly/474JhED

For #2025CNS, I was the MC at the Past Presidents’ Dinner. It was a beautiful night celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and honoring the presidents over the years who have led CNS to become the inimitable neurosurgical organization that it is today.

This afternoon, as part of #2025CNS, we broadcast the first carotid stent procedure from an outpatient center — ever — in the U.S. Thank you to those attending #2025CNS who joined us for this momentous event.

At UBNS, we pride ourselves on our integrated, community approach to healthcare. All of the pieces I mention here in our system work together to provide the best research, innovation, and care to our patients. “One-stop shopping” is right. We’re changing the game. And we can only do that together.

In honor of UBNS opening of the first Gamma Knife unit in an outpatient center, we brought in my friend and former chair, Dade Lunsford, who brought the first Gamma Knife to the United States in 1987. I am so proud to continue this work here at UBNS.

Almost all of us know someone who has Parkinson’s disease, or a tremor, or a seizure disorder; someone who has trouble getting dressed or walking on their own. The goal is functional independence for as many people as possible.

Before heading off to college, Max Diamond stopped by #UBNS to present us with funds he raised for brain tumor research. This is the second year Max has brought us this gift, as a way to commemorate the anniversary of his own surgery for a benign tumor on his cerebellum.
