We’re learning so much from these gull genomes, and there’s still plenty more to discover! 🪶✨🧬
Keep an eye on the #LarOmics project!

Elisa Ramos brings us a presentation about #gulls at the #biodiversity25. The large white-headed gulls lineage has one of the faster #radiation processes of the birds of the northern hemisphere. LarOmics project aims to elucidate the genetic base of the gull #evolution.

If you're interested in the new "Pope Gull," you can learn more about it by exploring the recently published reference genome for this species (Larus michahellis) by our research group 🪶🧬 Thanks #LarOmics @davidmarques.bsky.social @joanameier.bsky.social @sangerinstitute.bsky.social
The Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), recently better known as pope gull (Larus urbietorbicum 😁), has now a chromosome-scale sequenced reference genome! Our first publication from the #LarOmics project, congrats @eksramos.bsky.social et al., see: wellcomeopenresearch.org/articles/10-...

Very interesting! Recognizing and uniting different countries' strengths to drive the third era of genomics is smart. Investing in the potential of the Global South for this contribution is even smarter! 🌍 #Genomics

The third era of genomics is at risk of being dismantled across the global south
The first era of genomics started with the publication of Watson and Crick’s notable work on the description of the DNA double helix in 1953. This era lasted 50 years, until the publication of the hum...
