10 Things you need to know about corporate lobbying - a guide for investors, CSOs, policymakers and companies Corporate lobbying is a form of advocacy where corporations try to shape the government decisions. It's a way for businesses to have their voices heard in the political process Corporations and big business lobby governments to influence policy in their favour. They're usually seeking favourable legislation, lower taxes or reduced regulations. Their approaches might include shaping policy to increase profits, reduce costs or gain advantages over their competitors The individuals or entities who engage in corporate lobbying can include professional lobby firms, in-house lobbyists, trade and industry associations, think tanks and, sometimes, those in the companies involved The ways in which lobbying is regulated differ from nation to nation. In the UK, there are acts designed to increase transparency across the field. In the EU the Transparency Register requires lobbyists to disclose their activities and adhere to a code of conduct The scope and approach of lobbying and advocacy differs. Typically, lobbying targets policymakers and specific regulations or legislations. Advocacy, meanwhile, covers a wide range of activities which are all designed to raise awareness and support for a cause When large corporations dominate lobbying efforts due to their financial power, the voices of smaller organisations and civil society groups are often underrepresented or unheard entirely Corporate lobbying isn't inherently harmful, but when done without transparency, it can prioritise private interests over the public good. Companies face growing scrutiny over ESG practices. Lobbying against human rights policies can damage public trust Several businesses appeared to be supportive of the CSDDD, but were lobbying against key provisions. Some major industry lobby groups publicly supported due diligence but actively opposed the CSDDD Approaches to lobbying practices vary from state to state. These approaches are undergoing significant transformation. Many jurisdictions are actively examining existing protocols, aiming to enhance public trust in decision-making processes The impact of ethical lobbying can result in the best outcomes for everyone. Lobbying ethics is essential for maintaining the integrity of the political system and making sure that lobbying approaches serve the common good rather than only reflecting the interests of a few

Social LobbyMap frequently asked questions Social LobbyMap is a data platform that assesses corporate lobbying on human rights and labour standards against a range of recognised international standards. It aims to provide independent research, assessment and scoring on social policy engagement from both companies and industry associations. Social LobbyMap is designed for investors, civil society organisations, researchers, journalists, and policymakers — anyone interested in understanding how corporate influence shapes regulation and rights. Research like this is needed. Limiting corporate accountability to companies’ own operations and value chains neglects the significant influence companies have on regulation and enforcement. Mapping and assessing lobbying on social issues can replicate that effect in relation to human rights.
