Water power...
Cromford Mills, #Derbyshire
Cromford Mills was built in 1771 by Sir Richard Arkwright and became the world’s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill. In 2024, a new water wheel was installed at the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside a 17 kW hydro turbine and a water-source heating system to help power the site.

An autumnal day on the Cromford Canal at Whatstandwell in the Derwent Valley. The canal opened in 1794, and ran 14.5 miles from Cromford to the Erewash Canal, and today is an SSSI for its entire length from Cromford Wharf to Ambergate.
