New update, including my reasoning that getting off US tech means deleting Uber and going back to taxis instead of jumping to another labor-violating ride-hailing service.
I find it unbelievable when I talk to people who are adamant about getting off US tech, only to find out they continue to use Uber and/or Lyft. These are not only US-based companies when local transportation options are available, but they have (especially Uber) actively worked for nearly two decades to undermine not just the rights of drivers, but labor rights more widely by fighting to ensure workers can be reclassified as contractors. If you’re serious about getting off US tech, Uber must go. What’s the alternative? Listen, you can look for a non-US ride-hailing company, but many of them have adopted the same model that sought to side step the regulatory structure created over decades to balance the needs of drivers, riders, and the community as a whole. When I’m at home, I call the taxi company whose office is just a few minutes away or use their app. When I’m in a new city and need to take a taxi, I enjoy figuring out which one is the most reliable. Many taxi apps are surprisingly capable.

This week, I was in Syria visiting medical clinics & hospitals, primarily operating on donation and mutual aid efforts. Patients and community members spoke about the lifesaving care they receive without worrying about paying for their healthcare. I can’t wait to share more soon.

I'm honestly speechless.
Examining the bodies returned to their people after the most recent so-called ceasefire, Palestinian doctors noted that, in some bodies “the rib cage and ribs were clipped with a sharp saw—a medical saw, a bone saw—and the sternum, along with the central part of the ribs, [were] lifted to allow for the removal of the heart and lungs without damage to the organ being taken.” Organ procurement, with few exceptions like skin and cornea, requires that the body be either alive—via brain death—or just-dead—via circulatory death. It is plausible that some Palestinian prisoners’ torture led to brain death. It is also possible their torturers felt no need to wait. Palestinian witnesses have reported that some prisoners were alive at the time they were taken for organ extraction. In one batch of bodies, the organs removed were those commonly transplanted: heart, liver, lungs. The transplant surgeon waits for a person to die; the soldier can’t. The settler surgeon wields his mastery over the body to serve the state. Here, the surgeon acts as—is—a soldier.
