A Photojournalism Retrospective: 1985 ~ After 4 years in Los Angeles, armed with degree and real-world experience, I returned to Grand Rapids to do media work for Christian Reformed World Missions: print publications, A-V programs, writing & photography. First mission-field visit: Costa Rica.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: L.A. Times Hard News ~ Sometimes the news is not good. But we need to cover it anyway: it’s extreme or unusual; it affected many people; someone died. Once I arrived to a fatal incident before first responders~then I brought blankets instead of cameras.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: 1984 Olympics ~ The Los Angeles Times assigned many of their photogs to cover the Summer Olympics and hired freelancers like me to cover their regular beats. The large Orange County bureau was a busy place and I got assigned many interesting stories.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: The Los Angeles Times ~ After my first year in the photojournalism program at California State University/Long Beach I interned at the Southeast Bureau of the L.A. Times, circulation 1,072,500. On the last day of my internship I scored the front page, Morning Final.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: An Artful Dodger; A Careful Burner ~ I was 12 when first spent time in the darkroom. Seeing that photographic paper in the developing tray evolve an image before my eyes was absolute magic, and hooked me on what would become an engaging career and lifetime passion.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: The Gospel Rocks (no, seriously!) I was the band Kyro‘s drummer and one of its vocalists, songwriters, and keyboard players...a rock sound with guitars, drums, and keyboard, but fronted by a cello, violin, and flute; great harmonies, unique arrangements.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: Love Canal’s Toxic Waste ~ In 1980, a reporter and I were privileged (?) to enter the 70-acre Superfund site in Love Canal, a small suburb of Niagara Falls (the city), New York (the state). It’s an unbelievable true story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Canal

Can we talk about toxic waste? OK. Delightful, right?! 😅 On March 27, 2025, there was yet another oil spill in the St. Clair River. www.cbsnews.com/.../michigan.... shared this Coast Guard photo.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: Variety is what made it exciting to go to work at the paper each day: you never know exactly WHAT you’d be shooting that day, what people you would meet, some new information you’d learn. Photos ©Edwin de Jong, 1980, The Standard, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: Sports Beat ~ Though not athletic myself, I came to enjoy shooting lacrosse, rugby, soccer, soft-, base-, foot- and basketball, and did need to learn the rules of each! Notice white ball off left hip of the goalie—scored! ©Edwin de Jong, 1980, St. Cath. Standard.

A Photojournalism Retrospective: Crashing News ~ I once reached the scene of a fatal crash before the first responders, in which case I tended to the inebriated driver who survived rather than take pictures right away. In the accident pictured, no fatalities. ©Edwin de Jong, 1980, St. Cath.Standard.

Capturing Hard News ~ Besides my newsroom pager for leads and incidents, in my car I’d monitor police and fire dispatch channels and try to get the info when they do. That would increase the chances of a dramatic photo. © Edwin de Jong, 1980, St. Catharines Standard.
