De-extinction promises wonder, but asks us to confront harder truths. What does it mean to “love” nature in an age of extinction — and who bears the risks of resurrecting what we once destroyed? A thoughtful read: abiggerconversation.org/love-in-the-... @mickeygjerris.bsky.social
Love in the Age of De-extinction
We live in a century shaped by loss – of habitats, species and ecological certainty. The idea of reviving extinct creatures can be seductive. But resurrection isn’t just scientific: it is deeply moral...

A pretty terrible proposal for the EU and yet "Amazingly, it still manages to be more transparent than the UK’s weird 'precision breeding' regime.." Says it all.
A sweeping deal to deregulate new GMOs has been proposed in the EU, yet civil society still secured some key concessions – seed labelling, public registers and full GMO regulation for higher-risk plants. See next steps & comparison with UK regulations: beyond-gm.org/new-eu-propo...

To be clear, the government is implementing regulations in which it has tied its own hands to prevent any safety testing of ‘precision bred’ GMOs that wouldn’t apply to normal, non-novel foods. Makes it extremely difficult to act if independent evidence demonstrates a problem.
Here's a Monday myth breaker. No safety testing required - or legally allowed! - for new 'precision bred' GMOs from November. If it sounds like a reckless corporate loophole, that's because it is! #NotSoFunFact

If we consider reimagining legal relationships with nature to create new international crimes (ecocide) or granting personhood to rivers & forests then enslavement of nature should also be part of the discussion. The domination is real, the harm measurable www.theguardian.com/books/2025/o...
Should we treat environmental crime more like murder?
Serial killers and violent criminals dominate the headlines. What if we covered ecocide and pollution in the same way?

This really is a defining choice for the IUCN: do we stand by the first principle of conservation - to protect nature - or quietly acquiesce to the techno-capitalist drive to redesign it?
As the IUCN World Conservation Congress opens in Abu Dhabi, members face a pivotal choice between embracing genetic engineering as a conservation tool or pausing to apply the precautionary principle to these rapidly advancing technologies. abiggerconversation.org/protecting-nat…

In opposition, Labour was deeply critical of the lack of transparency around #GMO precision-bred organisms. In power, they have ushered in one of the least transparent & most liberal regimes in the world. #StopHiddenGMOs. DONATE to our legal fund now crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hidden-gmos
