A Geiger counter is also known as a Geiger–Müller counter. It is designed to detect ionizing radiation, including alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays.

It operates using a Geiger–Müller tube, which is filled with an inert gas (such as helium, neon, or argon) at low pressure.
