US tariff hammer drops today, including 104% on China that triggered Beijing's 84% counter-strike. EU counter-tariffs loading. Markets routed. Oil plummets to $58 as the self-inflicted trade war explodes. This is the new world order, a bleak and dangerous dawn of what is to come

The US and China, who between them account for around half of global GDP, are effectively imposing a trade embargo on each other with this trade war. As Africans say, when two elephants rumble, the grass suffers

History warns that trade wars can quickly escalate to armed conflicts. Leaders must be clear-sighted about the dangers building up in the world and urgently address them, especially as global norms continue to erode

Like China, if other countries adopt the same approach as the US, it will spell trouble for the global economy. Without restraints, the likelihood of a full blown global trade war is growing.
Yet, to do nothing is just as perilous

The US reciprocal tariffs signals a perilous shift towards arbitrariness and protectionism, abandoning a system it created and championed. This rejection of multilateralism and the WTO framework raises the specter of a devastating trade war, with dire global economic consequences

China hits back and hard. Beijing has imposed an additional 34% tariffs on US goods, sharply intensifying the trade war, placing several US entities on export controls, and designated others as "unreliable." The market sell-off will worsen, with a heightened global recession risk

My interpretation: @noiweala.bsky.social appears to be subtly advising against retaliation, suggesting dialogue and potential solutions like new alliances. Also, I think she's encouraging countries to take up the issue directly with the US, as she feels powerless to intervene
WTO chief @noiweala.bsky.social says many countries have been in touch asking for economic analysis of the impact of US tariffs/potential reaction on trade. Response will be provided to countries, but in the meantime member countries should also talk with each other to address the issue, she advised

As history shows, trade wars have no winners. The question is not whether the US will pay a price for Trump’s tariffs, but how severe the damage will be and how long it will take to repair

Tariffs may offer short-term political wins, but their long-term costs -- stagflation, global isolation, etc -- far outweigh any perceived benefits
April 3, 2025 at 9:51 AM
Trump's reciprocal tariffs signal the end of a trade liberalization era that has shaped the global order for decades. The fact is that the allure of economic nationalism is seductive but illusory

Millions of young Nigerians face a harsh economic reality and an uncertain future marked by soaring unemployment, poverty, and limited opportunities. At least two generations are trapped in a cycle of despair with little or no hope of breaking free

In Nigerian social media, the preference for salacious, often morally bankrupt entertainment over real issues reflects a staggering societal appetite for distraction and immediate gratification, hindering meaningful progress and perpetuating a cycle of superficiality

Milan's Theo Hernandez sent off (second yellow card) for simulation. Gutsy call by the ref, but it was the right decision. It was a blatant dive. #UCL
