The problem with film criticism is that we often judge a movie for what we WANT it to do, rather than for what it's actually DOING.
Now watching for #PodcastPrep. Is it controversial to say that this is my favorite #StarTrek? Because it bridges the gap between Trekkers/Non-Trekkers and the TV series/movies so well. #FirstContact #BorgSoundsSwedish

Don't forget to vote for "Grannies," "Dance Mode," "Rug Island," or "Cricket" as our topic of discussion for Episode 50 of Back to Bluey! Which BLUEY episode would you like to hear @crookedtable.bsky.social and I dig into for our podcasting milestone? #BlueyNation, let your voice be heard!

My issue with a.i. is that the folks who "create" frames like this aren't injecting what they do with any thought or creativity. They're simply copying the thought and creativity that someone else has already injected into actual art. And then they want to be praised for it. Frauds begetting frauds.

Back To Bluey is about to celebrate its 50th episode! To mark the occasion, @crokkk.bsky.social and I need your help deciding which episode to cover. We've hand-picked 4 fan-favorites but only one will drive this very special milestone conversation.

Which of these BLUEY episodes should we discuss?

YouTube is also a treasure trove of deep dives into film history. You owe it to yourself to spend more than 30 seconds of research, and channels like Silent Shawn, CinemaStix, Sideways, Patrick Willems, Like Stories Of Old, The Discarded Image, and StudioBinder take you to school better than most.

You wanna talk film history? There's a wealth of it at your fingertips. Bordwell-Thompson's Observations On Film Art is an invaluable resource, as is Tim Dirks's Filmsite. Read the works of Roger Ebert, and articles on Bright Lights Film Journal, CineAction, and film-history.org.

Film fans, film critics, and filmmakers: You're doing yourself a disservice by failing to brush up on your film history. We have so much to learn from the innovators of our past, the rules they helped to establish, and how film language today would be much different without them.

Now watching the sweatiest movie ever made for #PodcastPrep. I'd love to see the Vaseline budget on this one. Even John Grisham said, "[Joel] Schumacher knows we have air conditioning in Mississippi, right?"

My biggest issue with Disney STAR WARS is how 90% of it is firmly stuck in the past, padding out already established lore and rehashing the same old visuals and ideas, instead of trying to move forward with new character arcs and narratives. It's booooring, and it's not for me.

28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE is a continuation that looks at the bones of Britain with a lens not aimed at the terror of the infected, but on a nightmare of human making. As it unfolds, missing humanity is profoundly found behind the infected gaze. My review: nerdspin.com/28-years-lat...
‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’: DaCosta’s Descent Into The Bones Of Humanity
'28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' A haunting sequel that strips horror down to its rawest truth: humanity is the real infection.

The first truly great major studio wide release of 2026 has arrived - and it’s only January. Nia DaCosta is on fire with this heavy metal monster masterwork. #TheBoneTemple is fantastic.

I'm not a true believer in Auteur Theory but I do believe that a director should be the final word on every shot, every edit, every note in the score, and every word of dialogue in every movie.

Y'know, the more STAR WARS they make, the more I realize that I've stopped caring about STAR WARS. Yes, Lucas's o.g. vision helped spark my love for all things cinema, and I love the characters and the idea that communing with The Force means communing with something larger than yourself... 1/2

New Back To Bluey for a New Year! In our latest episode, @crookedtable.bsky.social and I return for another Minisode Roundup. This time, we marvel at the elegant (and wordless) parallel stories of "Alongside," then give the littlest Heeler the standing ovation she deserves in "Drums." Link below!👇

It's very funny how everyone watched X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and collectively groaned, "Ugh, not this same exact thing again!" But now that Cyclops is wearing his comic-accurate blue leotard in #AvengersDoomsday, everyone is collectively overjoyed to be getting the same exact thing again.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills which might explain why I'm so out of touch on this app. So many people saying "look how far we've come" re: that X-Men #AvengersDoomsday teaser when... we've basically just been walking in circles? Same actors, same vibe for 25 years now!

UPDATE: There's nothing unfamiliar about JAY KELLY, but it's a wistful, melancholy story of a man who's gotten the career he wants at the expense of everything that would fulfill it, and his manager who sacrifices his own fulfillment by helping his client get everything he wants. I liked it a lot.

#NowWatching JAY KELLY on Netflix, first time. George Clooney? Yes. Adam Sandler? Sure. Noah Baumbach? Absolutely. George Clooney and Adam Sandler in a Noah Baumbach movie? Let's see what happens.

The more I see modern blockbuster "spectacle" and the way so many people praise it or hand-wave it as "good enough," the more I think some of you are going to fall for a.i. hook, line, and sinker. And you won't even realize that it's happened. Scary, scary times.
