This is oddly enough (one of) the only koan(s) that I know of where someone specifically expresses disapproval towards all the smacking and hitting in these old stories. 1

There’s a stillness that is lived in zazen, a stillness that arises along with the ceaseless motion of things. It comes unlooked for, but its transformative power sinks down to the very marrow of our practice and up into all the moments of our life.
