My mother in law dropped off a lovely homecooked meal as a belated birthday gift, and we chatted about dogs and travel plans. It was so thoughtful of her, and really made me smile.(Plus I adore her fried chicken!)

And so it begins...

(Some people deal with cold, grey weather with a light box or something. I plan summer travel. The light box would probably be cheaper, but whatever...)

Every photo from Minneapolis looks like this. Cops decked out with guns and full tac gear facing off against people in bathrobes, parkas, and sweatpants armed only with whistles and cell phones.

Yet every verified MAGA chode on X dutifully calls it a riot or violent insurrection.

Warmer weather (i.e. >40°F/4°C) means I was able to get out and walk a couple of miles around the neighborhood. My bad ankle may not appreciate it, but I feel better overall.

Following on yesterday's road trip musings, it looks like I'll probably be flying into Portland, OR and renting a car there. I'm plotting out a 4-week trip that would take me into Washington, British Columbia, Alberta, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, and back to Oregon.

I'm thinking the "Everything But The Football" live blog from @us.theguardian.com is going to be pretty entertaining tonight. www.theguardian.com/culture/live...

I'm thinking about this year's summer road trip. Over the last 9 years I've put in around 25,000 miles. I want to see more of SW Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and more of Northern California and Oregon, as well as Vancouver to Calgary. I need to get back to the Maritime provinces, too.

While I don't love the sound of the drones, the shots they are getting on the Olympic skiing events are game-changing (and somewhat vertigo-inducing at times!).

I used to draw characters playing instruments long ago and I thought could try drawing that again. And that idea coincided with my wanting to draw an American badger 🦡🎸

Shoutout to @theguardian.com for the correction on their delightful review of "Melania": "The star rating for this film was corrected on 2 February 2026. A formatting issue led an earlier version to be awarded one star, when the reviewer’s intention was zero." www.theguardian.com/film/2026/ja...

I was feeling down at home so decided to get out to my usual haunt. It’s fun to watch the Olympics with a crowd.

I’m very entertained that ice dancing came on and suddenly the bar is full of pro commentators who know the intricate details of scoring and technique.

I just happened to have Peacock last month and decided to let it ride for the Olympics (I usually rotate between streaming services). I've found the best thing in Olympics coverage: events with no commentary at all, just ambient sound. It's so refreshing!

I'm not usually one to have the TV on while I'm working from home, but there is something about having Olympics curling matches playing with the sound off that is oddly meditative.

Woohoo, got my taxes filed and accepted last night! The refund will cover my summer travel, at least.

Those simultaneous feelings of "I can travel with fewer complications without a dog" and "Having a dog when I travel makes the whole experience better" (and the irrational "I should feel bad because traveling without a dog sounds easier"). I contain multitudes, apparently.

This is some powerful reporting. I've been near where these people where tear-gassed, and it's hard to emphasize the level of incongruity, cruelty, and pointlessness of ICE's actions highly enough.

I've recommended my favorite M/M werewolf romances, now how about a list of ten of my favorite contemporary m/m romances? These are some of the best I've read in the last 10+ years, from incredibly sweet and thoughtful to absolutely hilarious.
