China's Shandong aircraft carrier was seen approaching Vietnam's EEZ on December 17, near the area where China announced it would conduct exercises from December 18 to 21.

On December 10, several Chinese warships were observed approaching Taiwan's contiguous zone but either chose not to enter or were intercepted by Taiwanese vessels.

A Taipei security source told Reuters that China currently has nearly 90 navy and coast guard ships in waters near Taiwan, the southern Japanese islands and the East and South China Seas, of which around two-thirds were navy vessels.
