Urologist /Lutenist. My views ≠ employer's. Music interpretations ≠ composer's original intent. VP Medical Director Uro-Oncology, Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Emeritus Professor of Urology, Cleveland Clinic
If there is just one medieval piece a Urologist should know, it's the 13th century Cantiga de Santa Maria #173. A man suffered from kidney stones and doctors couldn't help. He prayed to the virgin Mary, went to sleep, and awoke with the chestnut sized stone in his hand. youtu.be/ZTP8GsGTbHI

Marcabru was a Troubadour in the 12th century whose song L'autrier iustuna sebissa is one of the first examples of the Pastorella, poems (in Occitan) depicting an encounter between a knight and a shepherdess.

My intabulation of a 15th century song by Pierre Fontaine on medieval lute, whose name for some reason makes me think of a 1970's lounge singer. youtu.be/djOhLk8Z4cw

For this first night of Hannukah, a tune that celebrates a Jewish woman who by coincidence is also being honored for giving birth on this day. According to this song, she also did her mother proud by becoming an orthopedic surgeon since praying to her cured this man's limbs. youtu.be/blAt7G2JSv4

As the country ramps up to celebrate the birthday of a famous Jew who later became a Christian, here is a medieval dance by a 15th century Italian composer who took a similar path. Gugleilmo Ebreo da Pesaro later known as Giovanni Ambrosio wrote this Petit Vriens youtu.be/znWf-kXMWJI

The age old question: marry a poor, generous and refined handsome man or a rich man with no brains or beauty? Here is a tune from the early 1300's on the subject and spoiler alert, the poor man wins. Now we ALL have brains and beauty but only on social media. youtu.be/KGD-YBdryTE

Is Saturday night pizza night? Well here is some Domino's, along with 2 other songs in this 13th century trio that plays all 3 melodies at once. Several of these in the Montpellier Codex and it's great fun to see it all come together in one piece youtu.be/9k-VtWnQ6uU?...

BTW, the table in my profile banner is from the 1867 book "Renal and Urinary Affections". It lists all 11 known nephrectomies done to date for a malignant tumor, 2 done by Dr. Kocher in Bern (still love his clamp). Six died on the table or shortly after surgery. Being a pioneer can be humbling

My first blue music post! A textless tune Czaldy Waldy found in 3 manuscripts from the 14th century.Thought of as a dance of Czech origin, an interesting concordance found by Marc Lewon suggests it might be a German monophonic song "An czal dy etc". We argue about this stuff

Let's start this new sky with my favorite principles from the old site:
1) Don't treat pelvic pain empirically with antibiotics
2) There is no such thing in statistics as a "trend to significance"
3) The second "p" in "apoptosis" is silent
4) Lutes sound better strung in gut
