In an ideal world they really should have stood their ground here - admitted mistakes and moved on. But license fees and all that. Notable that both Tim Davie and Deborah Turness have advocated for more journalism recently. Dangerous times....

🧵 Across the world, democracy isn’t just under pressure, it’s facing epistemic collapse: a breakdown in the shared ability to know what’s true, to reason together and to hold power to account.

A new guest paper by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @drnataliemartin.bsky.social explores how to fix it.

The problem is a triple whammy of declining business model, increased information flow into newsrooms and via social media and a political class that does not tolerate scrutiny and without action this could lead to unchecked power and an information vacuum filled by unverified information....m/f

Are you concerned about the future of local news and democracy? Are the shenanigans at Notts - and other - County Councils ringing alarm bells VERY loudly? At CMPCR we've been doing research in this area and have findings to report - spoiler: the situation is not all bad - but it is not good....m/f

Labelling journalists as terrorists to justify their persecution, and murder, is an old trick and the grift of very illiberal governments. It “justifies” the action, besmirches reputations and deters others from continuing the vital work. RIP Anas al-Sharif 🙏

Our research on local news is finished. In a nutshell - the good news is that local journalists have a vocation and love their job. But the bad news? They don't have enough time to do it as well as they would like. This has consequences for local democracy..........m/f

To put it very bluntly, İmamoğlu is in prison for being more popular than Erdoğan. Even if he were a member of the AKP, I doubt they'd let such an offense stand.
An indictment has been prepared against the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoğlu, for ‘false diploma’, with a prison sentence of up to 8 years and 9 months.

It should be remembered that this case is founded on a questionable legal basis, which in particular violates the principle of legal certainty.

What we're doing in the uni sector is shutting off routes for kids with Bs and Cs to do key (and prestigious) subjects, and closing down the ability of young people to go to the local uni just when it becomes ruinous expensive to go way. Will have incalculable consequences for social mobility.
