The Constitution is clear:
Congress has the power and responsibility to authorize the use of military force and declare war. Congress has a duty of oversight. Congress must serve as a check, not a rubber stamp to the President.

On these counts, Congress has failed.

On the "boots on the ground" question and Trump saying that it will mainly be about protecting oil operations.

Given this framing, we should expect a massive payday for politically connected mercenary companies, who will use this to expand their private armies.

Blows my mind that some of the same journalists who see Trump as a want-to-be dictator at home are earnestly discussing the "challenges" for this same man to "bring democracy" to a country it just illegal invaded. Please grow up.

The weak response from Can, EU and UN to Trump's flagrant crimes in Venezuela is striking.

It exposes that much of the world has been cowed.

Most notable exception: the Latin American left.

That is why the Trump Admin has gone to enormous lengths to defeat the left across the continent. 1/3

I wrote about reporters’ refusal to use “act of war,” “invasion” or “coup” when covering Trump’s brazen attacks on Venezuela, instead echoing WH-approved euphemisms, and the broader trend of our press dutifully giving Trump’s lawlessness the vague whiff of international legitimacy when it has none.

With Trump, we see American imperialism with no clothes. Naked and vain. American imperialism is not just morally wrong. It is strategically disastrous.
I wrote this essay in March 2025 when Vance visited Greenland, and it is unfortunately still too relevant.

You're right, but the ALP had a lower primary vote than Bandt in 2025, and only won the seat with LNP preferences.
In any case the ALP seem quite prepared to continue LNP policies (Aukus, Robodebt, off shore processing) and side with the LNP against the Greens too often.

another interesting point about venezuelan oil that did not make it into this piece is that OPEC members self-report their reserves numbers — it's not impossible that chavez may have asked PDVSA to inflate just how much capacity the country is sitting on
