To paraphrase Marx, history first begins as tragedy and then ends as farce. From writer Ed Simon’s perspective, there’s nothing tragic in Duchamp’s “Fountain,” but there is something farcical in Maurizio Cattelan’s functional, solid 18-carat gold toilet that sold for $12.1 million.
Maurizio Cattelan Is No Duchamp
One elevated the prosaic. The other merely gilded the familiar.

Nvidia relief won't be enough to dispel tech-bubble angst
Markets may have weathered a key Nvidia earnings test but the ability of big tech to move sentiment across markets on a dime will continue to preoccupy investors as lofty valuations persist.

Leaders of a Minnesota church community didn’t report a parishioner they knew had sexually abused girls for year.

They told his victims that once sins were “washed away in the blood of reconciliation,” they could never speak of them again.

Just to say it again:

In another federally regulated field with life-and-death consequences—aviation—anyone who made this sort of gross, grotesque error would be held accountable, and no longer put in charge of other people's fate.
🚨BREAKING: Federal prosecutors admitted Wednesday that the grand jury handling the criminal case against former FBI Director James Comey never reviewed or voted on the final indictment used to charge him — a virtually unprecedented revelation that could topple the entire case.

I don’t think the average person understands the difference between a single work before and after it’s peer-reviewed. However, that difference is rarely the only deciding factor in determining a work’s accuracy or significance.

True to some extent, but does the average person understand the difference between Ken Burns, a dude who makes historical films, and a historian whose work undergoes a review process? His trust in Shelby Foote does not inspire confidence in Burns' judgment.
