Europe needs digital sovereignty, and Open Source is the most direct path to it. But it requires more contribution-based procurement. More public money must flow upstream to Open Source maintainers, not just to integrators and resellers.

When I was ten, my uncle gave me a Kasparov chess computer. Last night I was lucky enough to have dinner with Kasparov. I also learned that Daniel Naroditsky, whose YouTube videos rekindled my love for chess, had passed away. I'll be thinking about them both for a long time.

I tested 12 LLMs to generate alt-text for 9,000 images missing descriptions. Not surprisingly, cloud models performed best. For local options, Llama variants and MiniCPM-V were ok. Local models align with my values, but cloud models would serve visually impaired users better. dri.es/generating-i...
